MEET DR. Diekman

Hi, I Am Dr. Sarah Diekman, MD, JD, MS, MPH, FCLM. I Entered Medical School To Heal Others.
My Journey Almost Ended Before It Began. I Was Struck By A Myriad Of Symptoms That Were Keeping Me From Functioning At My Best For School Or My Personal Life. These Symptoms Will Be Very Familiar To Patients Who Experience POTS. I Begged My School For The Time Off To Go See Doctors. Often The Answer Was “No.” When When I Was Able To Get This Time Off, To See A Doctor, I Did Not Receive Answers, But I Did Receive Bills. Even Though I Was Fully Insured, My Bills Stacked Up So High, That I Didn’t Have Enough Checks In My Checkbook To Pay Them.
I Finally Realized That Something Was Wrong With Me And I Had To Figure Out What It Was. So I Mustered The Strength That I Had To Visit The Medical Library. I Found A Diagnosis That Fit: POTS. I Flew Across The Country To Get The Diagnosis Confirmed. After Confirming That It Was POTS, I Set Out On A Journey To Rehabilitate Myself, And Improve My Functional Status. Along The Way, I Did Not Have A Mentor With My Illness To Tell Me That Better Days Are Possible. I Hope My Story Can Provide That For My Patients.

Through Careful Treatment, Occupational And Environmental Medicine, And Goal Setting, I Graduated From Medical School, And Completed My Residency At Johns Hopkins In Occupational And Environmental Medicine. My Dreams Have Come True While Having POTS. It Was Not Easy. It Was Not Always Pretty, But It Has Been Done.

I Will Always Need Treatment For POTS. I Will Always Have To Modify My Environment To Keep Me Healthy. What I Won’t Have To Do Is Give Up My Goals. One Of Those Goals Is To Care For POTS/Dysautonomia And Long-Covid Patients. I Want You To Reach Your Goals And Enjoy Your Life. It May Look Different Than It Did Before, But Treatment Can Help. As Your Doctor, I Promise To Continually Educate Myself On New Treatments And Diagnostic Methods. There Is A Lot That Still Needs To Be Discovered About These Illnesses. I Can Be With You On This Journey.
